Stavros Kyriakides is a scientific artist who creates sculptures that don’t use any nails, glue, concrete or wires. Stavros prefers to rely on the laws of physics to balance his sculptures. Stavros created the sculptures to balance in the wild, windy south coast of Wellington. For the past four years, Stavros has been creating sculptures using different objects in all shapes and sizes. His first creation was made after Wellington’s storm. After a storm had happened in Wellington, he noticed a piece of driftwood lying on the shore of the beach. Off the cuff, he picked a few interesting pieces and he attempted to balance the pieces. He gently placed the those items on top of the other. As it was standing, the wild wind started moving the sculpture, but it didn’t fall over. From thereon, he made many more sculptures by using the laws of physics. To help his sculptures balance, he needs to find the centre of gravity. Mathematicians use calculus to to figure out where the centre of gravity is, but Stavros uses another method, time and patience.
